Review #4 - Berwick Inn

Chicken Caesar Salad at the Berwick Inn

This time around Julianne and I were visiting her sister in Melbourne. We went to their local - the Berwick Inn - for dinner.

Once again, comments are minimal.

The bacon came in strips/rashers rather than the usual crispy diced pieces, and it was hard to cut in the bowl.

The anchovies on the other hand were sliced into small pieces and hard to find.

The chicken was on skewers and hard to eat.

The dressing was watery and tasteless.

To prevent this entry from devolving into one big negative review, there were positives. The lettuce and the egg were good, and it did taste pretty nice.

This is a general comment, placed after the latest entry at time of writing for convenience only.

Firstly, thanks for the blog. There simply aren't enough salad blogs out there, let alone niche salad blogs.

Second, it's all a bit negative don't you think? You need to find at least one exemplary salad, to keep up the spirits of the readership. Too grey, too grey.

Third, it egg truly essential in a masterclass caesar salad, or is this simply a personal if not idiosyncratic preference? I may well be entirely in the wrong here, but egg doesn't feature as key constitutive component in my memory.

Fourth, do you have any stand on cheese on caesar salads? If you do prefer cheese, what kind, ideally?

Fifth and finally - how about some images of these salads?

Sixth and finallier - color me crazy but I find menu write-ups amusing. If you wanted to indulge a blogfan, you could quote the in-menu description of the salad in each case.

Again, thanks for the public service. Even us gluetinables find it informative. (Yes I know it's "gluten" but "glue tin" is funnier.)

Thanks for the feedback qey. All valid points. In reply:

1. Indeed.

2. Yes. I particularly noticed how negatively inclined the reviews are when posting this most recent review. The thing is that when Julianne initially scored these, (a) we didn't have this blog in mind - it was all just a bit of fun, and (b) we started with a maximum score and then deducted points due to deficiencies (sort of like the way they score gymnastics). Therefore this added to the negative vibe (as it were). Rest assured we will make more of an effort for a more rounded approach for future reviews.

3. Julianne says: egg is most definitely a key ingredient in a true caesar salad. Therefore you are in the wrong. :-)

4. Parmesan cheese is also a key ingredient. I refer you to the original post in this blog entitled Why Caesar Salads?.

5. Camera on stand by.

6. Far be it for us to withold amusement. Consider it done.
